They had heard of Frame.io but haven\u2019t used it or anything like it. I\u2019ve used a few of the shot tracking\/review apps such as Shotgun, F-Track, Kitsu, Harmony Producer, etc. but Frame.io\u2019s been a go-to app that\u2019s quick to set up, fairly shallow learning curve, and economical. I also like it because it\u2019s primarily for video footage review, whether for live action or animation. Animation pipelines require a bit different set up because the start of the production begins with a \u201clocked animatic\u201d (approved edit).<\/p><p>This article is primarily for a 2D pipeline but can easily be modified for the more extensive 3D and Stop-Motion pipelines. We\u2019ll briefly go through how to set up Frame.io and how to get around it but as stated, it\u2019s a fairly easy learning curve that a relevant Youtube review can quickly get you sorted.<\/p><p>We\u2019ll go through the following topics:<\/p><ol><li>Obtaining Frame.io<\/li><li>Setting Up the Frame.io Workspace and,<\/li><li>Animation Folder Workflow<\/li><\/ol><figure id=\"attachment_2047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2047\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2047 size-full\" title=\"Parrott.Cliff\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Adobe-CC.jpg\" alt=\"Frame.io Through Adobe Creative Cloud\" width=\"600\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Adobe-CC.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Adobe-CC-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frame.io Through Adobe Creative Cloud<\/figcaption><\/figure><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>1. Obtaining Frame.io<\/h5><p>\u00a0Luckily, obtaining Frame.io is quite easy. It can be set up from their site at <a href=\"https:\/\/frame.io\">frame.io<\/a>. And because Adobe acquired it, you can access it through Adobe\u2019s Creative Cloud which integrates easily with Adobe Premiere, and other editing software such as Final Cut, Avid\u2019s Media Composer, etc. If you get it through Adobe, it includes 2 users, 5 projects, 100 GB of storage, and integration Camera to Cloud.<\/p><p>It also integrates with <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\">Slack<\/a> which, if you haven\u2019t used, is a great way to organise communication between departments along the pipeline. What\u2019s great about using Slack is that in Frame.io\u2019s comments, you can put a hashtag \u201c#\u201d in front of a department name and that note will show up in the corresponding Slack channel. Example, \u201c<em>#Editing &#8211; Split this scene into 2 &#8211; thanks.<\/em>\u201d This will automatically be sent to the Editing Channel, and it can also be sent to Production Management so they can get it on their tracking system.<\/p><h5>2. What Frame.io is and is not.<\/h5><p>Frame.io is primarily an online video footage review app. It\u2019s not the best for tracking shots, asset management, etc. Much more costly apps such as F-Track, Shotgun, and Harmony Producer will do the video review plus all the tracking, scheduling, and asset management. Frame.io\u2019s great for small to mid-size productions that need to curb their costs. For the productions I\u2019ve set up, we use Google Workspace for the tracking system (that\u2019s another article).<\/p><h5>3. Pricing<\/h5><p>You can go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/frame.io\/pricing\">Frame.io<\/a> site and check the pricing but it is a per seat subscription which can be monthly\/yearly. They have package plans that set up bands of pricing for multiple user packages. Unless I know the production will go on longer than a year, I always opt for the monthly. It\u2019s easier to get out of but, depending on the savings of the yearly subscription it may work out that a yearly option is the more beneficial.<\/p><h5>4. Roles<\/h5><p>There are 2 types of roles: <strong>Team Members<\/strong> and <strong>Collaborators<\/strong> &#8211; both require being paid members. There is a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> type of person who can use it, but they don\u2019t have to be a paid member, that is a <strong>Constituent<\/strong>. This role is basically your Client, whoever that is: broadcaster, creative agency, distributor, etc. The Constituent can receive a share link in either a Review or Presentation mode, (more on that later).<\/p><p>Here&#8217;s the basic breakdown:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Team Members<\/strong> &#8211; (Paid) Usually in-house crew that can do everything &#8211; renaming, delete projects, and give permissions.<\/li><li><strong>Collaborators<\/strong> &#8211; (Paid) This is usually for temp people and vendors (Oversea Studios). They can open files, play them, add comments, publish it, and change status but they\u2019ll need Team Member permission to share it with Clients, download, invite other collaborators.<\/li><li><strong>Constituent <\/strong>&#8211; (Free) Depending on which mode of link they get, they can:<\/li><\/ul><ol><li><strong>Review Mode<\/strong> &#8211; Make notes\/comment on work in progress and access as files as the link allows. Or, . .<\/li><li><strong>Presentation Mode<\/strong> &#8211; Usually this is just for viewing finished video. They can only access one file at a time. The presentation interface can be customised, so it has the studio\u2019s branded colours.<\/li><\/ol><h5>5. Setting Up the Workspace<\/h5><p>Now that you\u2019ve set up your Frame.io account and are looking at the Demo project &#8211; what to do next? A lot depends on how your studio or operation works. I\u2019ll show you how I set it up but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s the best way. Please feel free to modify whatever\u2019s presented &#8211; there\u2019s many different roads to the end of production.<\/p><ul><li><h6><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A. Layers and Folders<\/span><\/h6><\/li><li>Unlike sharing folders on a server, with Frame.io, you have the option to stack your footage versions in Layers. Depending on your needs, it may work best that you put all the versions in a folder unstacked. But I\u2019ll go through why Layers are <em>wicked pissah<\/em> (Bostonian for \u2018good\u2019). The first thing you need to understand, to get the most out of layers is that the versions must be the same video length with matching\/synched timecode. This is only way to make sure that as you compare versions, you\u2019re looking at the same video at the same timecode.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><h6><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">B. Editing<\/span><\/h6><\/li><li>In this article, I won\u2019t go into detail how to set up the editing timeline &#8211; that\u2019s another subject to address later but &#8211; it\u2019s good to know a few bits of info and specs you\u2019ll need for the footage intended to upload to the project file.<\/li><\/ul><ol><li><strong>Length\/Timecode<\/strong> &#8211; As stated above, to stack versions and be able to compare between them, their length and timecode need to synch.<\/li><li><strong>Shot\/Scene Numbers<\/strong> &#8211; Depending on your studio\u2019s \u201cFile Naming Conventions\u201d (yet another issue worthy of its own article), it should include the scene or shot number (some studios use both). Some studios include a sequence number in the name, but the file name starts getting very long.<\/li><li><strong>Version Numbers<\/strong> &#8211; As you review the animation and make notes, how do you know what clip to review? Well, that\u2019s easy! You review the latest version, hence the reason why you need to include that info in the file&#8217;s Naming Convention, (a version or a take number). If I\u2019m asked to review the 3d version, I will look at the clips that end with a \u201cV3\u201dor whatever you suffix you give to distinguish versions.<\/li><\/ol><figure id=\"attachment_2048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2048\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2048 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Workspace.jpg\" alt=\"Frame.io's Workspace\" width=\"600\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Workspace.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Workspace-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frame.io Workspace<\/figcaption><\/figure><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>6. Folder and Layer Management<\/h5><p>The image above shows a basic folder layout in Frame.io. Like all folder systems, you can double click into it and have more folders. As mentioned above, what\u2019s great about Frame.io is that they allow version stacking, making the folders clean and easy to view inside them.<\/p><p>This is my basic folder set up but please feel free to adopt whatever folder organisation you\u2019re used to. A word of caution though. Over the years I\u2019ve noticed that sometimes a production crew get into hyper-categorising folders with sub-folders, and sub-sub-folders. They fine tweak the system so much, it loses its simplicity.<\/p><p>To an organised person (i.e. Left Brained People), the system may look like a marvel of logic but to us Right-Brained types, it\u2019s a labyrinth of folders. Too many choices causes schedule conscious artists to start dropping assets into incorrect folders, insisting that they submitted it &#8211; which is true but, it\u2019s not in the correct sub-sub-sub-folder. Keep it simple! You can use some permissions to make sure people can\u2019t modify a folder but if the system is simple and as fool proof as possible, it\u2019ll run way smoother with less headaches.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b427823 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b427823\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6>PRO TIP 01:<\/h6><p>Once you\u2019ve set up a master folder that contains sub-folders for all the episodes, the last thing you want to do is remake those folders again and again, especially if you have 52 of them. Frame.io has an answer to this &#8211; <strong>Duplicate, Copy and Move To<\/strong>. Just select the folder with all the episodic sub-folders, right-click, and chose the option that works best for the task: \u201cMove To . . .\u201d \u201cCopy To . . .\u201d and \u201cDuplicate\u201d. You can do other things in the pop-up window too.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2052 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Pop-Up-Folder-Window-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Pop-Up-Folder-Window-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Pop-Up-Folder-Window.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18b18f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18b18f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here&#8217;s a description of my basic folder breakdown:<\/p><ul><li><em><strong>Animatics<\/strong> <\/em>&#8211; This folder is for the process of getting your animatics locked. It usually has comments from a Broadcaster or other Stakeholder that you may want to keep private. Once it\u2019s approved or as they say, a \u201c<strong>Locked Animatic<\/strong>\u201d then it can be duplicated and sent to other folders as the foundation layer.<\/li><li><em><strong>Animation<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; You can break this into sub-folders such as \u201cRough Pass\/Blocking\u201d \u201cCharacter Animation\u201d \u201c2D Effects\/VFX\u201d or the Roughs, Character Animation, and Effects can be stacked on top of one another. This latter approach might get a bit confusing with all those layers though.<\/li><li><em><strong>Compositing<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Fairly straight forward but again, this can be broken into sub-folders per the pipeline.<\/li><li><strong>Audio<\/strong> &#8211; This folder can be broken into sub-folders \u201cMusic Review\u201d \u201cSound Mix Review\u201d<\/li><\/ul><figure id=\"attachment_2060\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2060\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2060 size-full\" title=\"Parrott.Cliff\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Interface.jpg\" alt=\"Frame.io UI\" width=\"600\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Interface.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Interface-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frame.io UI<\/figcaption><\/figure><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>7. Animation Review Workflow<\/h5><p>Now that you\u2019ve got your fancy schmancy folders all organised and populated with episode folders and footage, let\u2019s go through how I perform my review.<\/p><p>There are wonderful instructional YouTube videos on how to use Frame.io\u2019s UI effectively. I highly recommend going through it once in a while because I discover it can do some cool stuff plus, they update its functions.<\/p><h6>A. Stacking Versions<\/h6><p>Stacking versions is wicked simple, with the video files all in the same folder, choose the one that\u2019s going to be the bottom layer. Choose the one that\u2019ll be the next layer, click and drag\/drop it on the first layer and &#8211; Whallah! You\u2019ve just made a version stack. You can tell it\u2019s stacked by the little <em>\u201cVx\u201d<\/em> button on the top right corner of the thumbnail.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2061\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Stacked-V3-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Stacked-V3-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Stacked-V3.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><h6>B Review Tools<\/h6><p>Here\u2019s just a small list of basic Frame.io tools you can use to get around the footage:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Moving along the timeline:<\/strong> \u00a0You can scrub along it, or even better us the \u201cJ K L\u201d keys to move back, forth, stop and multiple frames.<\/li><\/ul><figure id=\"attachment_2783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2783\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2783\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/05b_Status.jpg\" alt=\"IMG\" width=\"345\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/05b_Status.jpg 606w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/05b_Status-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Status<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><strong>Status<\/strong> &#8211; This can be set to \u201cNo Status\u201d \u201cApproved\u201d \u201cIn Progress\u201d and \u201cNeeds Review\u201d This is one of Frame.io\u2019s shortfalls. Our Shot Tracking works on a traffic light system. It would be great to have the option to customise Status so it reflects our system.<\/li><li><strong>The Three Dots!<\/strong> It\u2019s located next to the Status Box. If you click the infamous 3-Dots, you\u2019ll be able to \u201cDownload\u201d \u201cMake Private\u201d \u201cReveal In Project\u201d and \u201cDelete\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Comments &amp; Information Box<\/strong> &#8211; Next to the Viewer, there\u2019s a box where the Comments reside. At the top, you can \u201cAdd Description\u201d such as the episode name and whatever info you\u2019d like people to see. Next to the Comments Tab is the File Information Tab. This gives info on the video file. \u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Sort-By Box<\/strong> &#8211; Comments can be filtered in the drop-down box under the Comments Tab. With this you can view the comments in various ways by; \u201cOldest\u201d \u201cNewest\u201d \u201cTimecode\u201d \u201cCommenter\u201d and \u201cCompleted\u201d. In this box you have options to restrict comments to just Team Members or \u201cPublic\u201d \u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2062\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Sort-By-289x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Sort-By-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Sort-By.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/p><ul><li><strong>Comments<\/strong> &#8211; This is where all the action is! Comments, and Replies to Comments, live here. As Comments are made by typing in the Comment Box at the bottom of the Viewer, they automatically get synched timecode (not necessarily your editor\u2019s timecode but, Frame.io Player\u2019s timecode). The person making the comment is aptly named a \u201cCommenter\u201d which comes in handy when you use the \u201cSort By\u201d filter and check the \u201cCommenter\u201d option.<\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2063\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Comments-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Comments-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Comments.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/p><p>These Comments can be download as text files to be imported to a tracking system.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2064\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Comment-download-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Comment-download-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Comment-download.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/p><p>As an Artist fixes the shots, they can check it, marking it off as complete by clicking in the \u201cMark Complete\u201d circle.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2065 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Mark-Complete-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Mark-Complete-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Mark-Complete.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/p><ul><li><strong>Comment Input Box<\/strong> &#8211; At the bottom of the Viewer is where the Comments and Drawings are created. Once it\u2019s written, you click \u201csend\u201d and it appears in the Comment Box on the right. The note can be made a general note by clicking on the purple timecode, turning it off. The comment can also be restricted to team members. Having a drawing tablet makes things way easier to draw out comments but I\u2019ve managed to use just a mouse at times. The drawing tools are primitive but effective. Review Methods and Issues To Check<\/h5><p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sweatbox <\/span>&#8211;<\/strong> Each production has many issues to review when going over animation footage. I\u2019ve worked at some of the larger LA studios and one of the practices that really works well is an animation industry phenomenon referred to as \u201cSweatboxing\u201d. And no, it\u2019s not a sweaty producer and a sweaty animator squaring off with leather gloves, though that could be very entertaining.<\/p><p>A \u201c<em><strong>Sweatbox<\/strong><\/em>\u201d is a term coined by Disney animators. It\u2019s the same thing as reviewing \u201crushes\u201d or \u201cdailies\u201d. The term came about because Disney would review the footage in a small editing suite that got very warm. It also refers to how nervous the animators were when their shots were reviewed &#8211; sweating bullets. But most animation reviews happen remotely which is why apps like Frame.io come in so handy. If you want to recreate Disney\u2019s sweatbox, next time you have to review animation, bring your laptop into a stuffy closet under a stairway like Harry Potter and have fun.<\/p><p>What was great about sweatbox was the many eyes peering at the shots. I learned loads of what to look for by listening and seeing what people in the room were catching. There was the omnipresent Hook-Up problems. It was like a game to see how many HU\u2019s you could get compared to the sharpest eyes in the room.<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Version Comparison Tool<\/strong> <\/span>&#8211; By stacking your versions as layers back in paragraph 7a above, you can now take advantage of the Version Comparison Tool. This is a great tool that matches up with some of the really good Footage Review apps like Shotgun. Issues to Review<\/h6><p>Here\u2019s just a handful of the most common issues to look for. Special Issues are addressed below.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Framing<\/strong> &#8211; Believe it or not, <strong>\u201cAction Safe\u201d<\/strong> is still a thing. One would assume that because most are screens are digital, terms like <strong>\u201cTitle Safe\u201d<\/strong> are a thing of the past BUT, you\u2019d be wrong. Don\u2019t worry, Frame.io\u2019s got you covered with their <strong>\u201cGuides\u201d<\/strong> tool. Just click on the guide icon in the bottom right corner and you get all sorts of different guides. In the example image below, I use the common <strong>16:9 Guide<\/strong>. This gives me a really quick\/easy check &#8211; a no brainer. If the composition of the shot looks too far outside the guide, make a note. Frame.io\u2019s even thought of people who don\u2019t have great internet connection. Change the rate so you can see the playback work without rebuffering a lot.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2099 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Playback-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Playback-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Playback.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><ul><li><strong>Hook Ups &#8211;<\/strong> It\u2019s a continuity check to see if the character\/object between 2 scenes are doing the same thing, facing the same way, in the same pose, eye line is the same, etc. Even though checking to see if \u2018everything matches between connected shots\u2019 is straight forward, you\u2019d be surprised at how many HU&#8217;s you&#8217;ll miss. The eye gets lazy and ironically the \u201cIllusion of Motion\u201d that animation is based on &#8211; (our eye sees movement but we\u2019re actually seeing a series of still images at a rate) &#8211; fools us into missing Hook Ups. This is why the sweatbox sessions are so good &#8211; lots of eyes, all competing to catch a hook-up.<\/li><li>In shorthand, they\u2019re written \u201cHU\u201d and sometimes I\u2019ll put an arrow pointing to the previous or next scene, meaning \u2018Hook Up this pose with the previous scene\u2019 and to be doubly sure, I write it in the Comment Box too.<\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2103 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hook-Up.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hook-Up.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hook-Up-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><ul><li><strong>Posing &#8211;<\/strong> To me, this is the most interesting part of reviewing animation. I like looking at a shot and figuring out, how can this tell the visual story better? Well, Frame.io gives us a primitive set of drawing tools to draw detailed notes .<\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2105 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drawing-Tools.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drawing-Tools.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drawing-Tools-300x72.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><ul><li>The tools are located in the Comment Making Box at the bottom. Click on the colour wheel and brush icon, that\u2019ll bring up your options. I mainly use the freehand drawing tools, taking advantage of the colours to distinguish between different types of notes within the same frame. There are shape tools, line tools, and if you\u2019re into arrows, Frame.io\u2019s got you covered with their arrow tool, go nuts and make a quiver (that\u2019s an archery joke).<\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2109 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Posing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Posing.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Posing-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><ul><li>Most of the posing problems usually deal with pushing mediocre poses but, by utilising <em><strong>Animation 101 Principles<\/strong> <\/em>such as strong silhouettes, iconic posing so viewers instantly identify a character\u2019s feeling, etc. For this type of note, I\u2019ll always draw the character\u2019s \u201c<em><strong>Line of Action<\/strong><\/em>\u201d, another Animation 101 principle. Then I\u2019ll do a gesture drawing &#8211; (those years of life drawing classes come in handy here) &#8211; making sure to show the character\u2019s centre lines on the body and head if those are at issue.<\/li><\/ul><p>Other issues to look for are:<\/p><ul><li>Hand posing\/gestures<\/li><li>Perspective on the Character, Prop and Location<\/li><li>Emotions are accurate and appropriate (check with or defer to the Director on this one)<\/li><li>Eye Lines that make sense, and.<\/li><li>Matching it to what\u2019s been approved in the animatic. A lot of times, board artists draw the best poses but when it\u2019s applied to a rig, it falls short.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e630bdb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e630bdb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6>PRO TIP 03:<\/h6><p><strong>MULTI-NOTE:<\/strong> By lumping together notes into one comment &#8211; it\u2019ll save you time, but it can get tricky if there\u2019s too much info and the comment\u2019s confusing. It&#8217;s a common sense call &#8211; though it may save time, why make notes no one understands so, break the notes up accordingly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14311c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14311c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>9. Special Issues<\/h5><ol><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Note Making Etiquette<\/strong> <\/span>&#8211; After going through a particularly rough animation pass, you find yourself seeing the same mistake over and over, it\u2019s natural to get your dander up and start writing sterner wording. Before long, you could find your self writing ALL IN CAPITALS and lacing it with snarkiness! But don\u2019t succumb to your dark side young Skywalker. The artists reading your notes most likely aren&#8217;t digesting the mistakes at the same concentration you&#8217;re experiencing when you review. Artists will most likely get offended if you write snippy, snarky, and snotty comments. I discovered the best thing to do when you see the same mistake happening is to have an <strong>\u201cOVERALL NOTE:&#8221;<\/strong> at the start of the footage and let them know you encountered this reoccurring mistake, and you\u2019ve stopped making notes on it at such and such a timecode. Leave it at that.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Notes &amp; Timecode<\/strong> <\/span>&#8211; Over the years, I\u2019ve learned to be very specific with notes. Instead of writing \u201cCharacter enters here\u201d or \u201cCharacter Exits by here\u201d you should write in the editor\u2019s timecode in the comment. Make sure to use editing&#8217;s timecode, not Frame.io\u2019s, because the animator will have the animatic that uses the editing timecode. So the same note will read like \u201cCharacter enters by 01:00:14:13\u201d or \u201cCharacter Exits by 01:00:19:02\u201d<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Editing Issues &#8211;<\/strong> <\/span>An Editor is going through a lot of info and sometimes stuff will slip by. Some of the most common editing issues are (1) Incorrect Scene\/Shot numbering, (2) Misinterpretation of a Storyboard so scenes may need to be split or inserted, and (3) Timecode synch issues.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>To Comp or Not Comp?<\/strong> <\/span>The poor Compositing Dept. have the sad luck of being the last stage in the animation pipeline. So, if at some earlier stage an issue gets kicked down the road, it&#8217;ll eventually land in Composting\u2019s lap. My motto is, \u201cIf you can fix it where it started in Boards\/Shot Prep\/Animation &#8211; then fix it there.\u201d Think twice about asking Comp to reframe, an animator can do it just as quickly. But things like camera moves should be done in Comp &#8211; they have better tools, more control, and the camera move may need to be tweaked later. If the move was done in Animation, the shot will have to go back there to fix it, and if you\u2019re lucky, the animators are still there.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Storyboard problems<\/strong> <\/span>&#8211; Poor storyboards and\/or animatics issues will quickly snowball into a mess, unless spotted early on. They could be fixed at <strong>Shot Prep Stage<\/strong> or in <strong>Animation<\/strong>, but the best time is when the board artist is still working on the project. Going through storyboards is a subject for another article but here\u2019s a couple of issues I\u2019ve encountered while reviewing animation.<\/li><\/ol><ul><li><strong>180 Degree Rule:<\/strong> One of the top issues I catch often is breaking the 180 Degree Rule. If you\u2019re not familiar with it, here\u2019s a brief definition: &#8220;I<em>t\u2019s a screen direction of spatial relationship between characters\/objects. To ensure characters\/objects don\u2019t break the rule, draw an imaginary line, and keep your camera angle on just that side between the characters. If a character is screen-west and another is screen-east, then when we cut between shots, they should remain on their respective sides unless you cut to another shot without them. So, if you go from an over-the-shoulder OTS shot, to a mid-shot of 2 characters talking, they can\u2019t switch sides. If you want to switch sides, then you need to cut to a close up of one of their faces, or something else. Rules can be broken but, it\u2019s best to learn them first and why they work.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2116\" src=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/180-Rule-Graphic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/180-Rule-Graphic.jpg 600w, https:\/\/parrottcliff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/180-Rule-Graphic-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><ol><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Where are we?<\/strong><\/span> Too many close up shots in a sequence will confuse the audience.
